I'm just now getting started with OPN, and so far really love it. There is one thing that would be a HUGE help to me, and likely other newcomers...a simple 'getting started' guide of some kind.
It could be very simple, a sample screen...and listing which modules were used in which locations. Perhaps something like:
- A 'news' type site
- An information site
- A blog type site
- A general all purpose site
Also, I'm trying to digest what goes on in the templates/css, but it would sure be nice to have a simple 'how to'. I read the .css entry in the Diagnostics section, and while helpful, it was pretty sketchy on the actual details.
I'm very excited, and eager...but like most of us, time is a critical factor in my choices. I've been using XOOPS for some time, and despite it's shortcomings, it is easy to get up and running.
I mean this to be helpful...not as critisism...

Hello Mark,
thank you for your words.
Believe me - we are working on a documentation. AFAIK ist about 150 pages right now (and with a lot of information). To create a small guide is not that easy as it sounds, because opn is realy more complex than other nuke-alike systems.
We try to make it easy for everybody to start with opn. If you have any question post them right here - we will answer all of them.
All main coders (an helping people around opn) are native german speaking - so the "main" site is the openphpnuke.info. There are some more information to read. "Manne" and "extreme" are doing a hard job to translate all this to english to have this site here for international users on the same level. For example: on the german site is a "howto" on creating a theme and so on.
Right now please have a look at the opn theme itself. The code should be placed with comments, so it should be no bigger problem to create an own theme.
The international relase of opn has just started - so we will need a bit more time to have everything "smooth and easy" up and running.
Feel freee to place some question in our forums.

Trust me, I know that this is a lot of work, and it was meant more in the spirit of 'helping' than one of critisism. By the way, what is AFAIK?
As I mentioned, I've been using Xoops...but am looking for something a bit more next generation, and I think that OPN might be just such an animal. Unfortunately, it is a very busy time for me in my main business...and my progress investigating the options has been slow.
I read somewhere that you were working on a conversion from Xoops, so I assume you (or some team member) is fairly familiar with it? Could you very briefly explain what advantages you think OPN would offer
Thanks

AFAIK is the acronym for As Far As I Know.
Mmhh, differences between XOOPS and OPN. There are lots of differences.
The main difference ist the rightmanagment. We use a system like unix. So a usergroup can inherit the rights from antoher usergroup. And you can give a user rights too.

Thanks for your quick reply! Is the current ~150 pages available anywhere?
Right now I am interested in developing the Weblogs feature some. Do I understand that I can offer any member their own BLOG if I set it up right?
Also, is there a way for me to "wrap" an existing page or site within the OPN framework...something like an iframe or virtual include?
Many thanks
Mark

We answer questions ASAP.
Under http://www.openphpnuke.com/modules/phpwiki/index.php/Admindoku you can see what our translators have translated from the german documentation to english. In the english documentation are not all modules at the moment.
The Weblog module is only for admins. Some german OPN users are asking for an user BLOG too. So we will build such a module.
You can use the anypage module to iframe an existing page. You can use the anypage module for HTML or PHP Pages.

AFAIK = as far as I know.
The conversion thing is my "toy". I do not know much about xoops. Its enaough for me to know something about databases
If you have a xoops-db and you dont have a problem with "sending me a dump (structure and data)" I will finished the script. It's much easier if I have some real data - so errors will be easier to find.
I'm working in IT-business in a financial organisation - so don't worry that I could do some strange things with your data.
